Antenna Choices for UK Search and Rescue Teams

Volunteer search and rescue teams operate in the places radio networks cover worst: mountains, moorland, coastline and remote valleys. Their communications have to work where mobile coverage is absent and where a dropped call can delay a casualty evacuation. The right antennas extend what each team's radios can do with limited budgets.

Base station antennas

A team base needs reliable coverage across its area, often from a building in a valley. A higher-gain base station antenna on a mast, or a link to a hilltop repeater, makes the most difference. For VHF networks, the BASE001 unity gain omni and the base301 3 dBd series cover the 150 MHz band. For UHF, the UHF43X is built for DMR and LMR use. Our base station antenna guide compares the options.

Vehicle antennas

Team vehicles act as mobile control points, so they need good antennas for team radio, cellular data and GNSS. A well-mounted vehicle antenna makes a large difference over a handheld, especially in deep valleys. Separate the antennas properly on the roof, as covered in our roof layout guide.

Portable relays

When the search area is out of range of the base and vehicles, a portable relay on high ground can bridge the gap. A lightweight antenna on a portable mast, with a repeater and battery, can be carried to a hilltop and set up quickly. See our portable antenna range.

GNSS for tracking and navigation

Tracking team members and recording search areas depends on GNSS. Vehicle-mounted antennas such as the SATMAG magnetic mount can be fitted and moved without drilling.

Satellite backup

Where no terrestrial network reaches, satellite communications provide a fallback. Thuraya antennas such as the mobile SATCOM antenna kit give vehicle coverage with a low-profile magnetic mount.

Make the budget go further

  • Spend on antennas and cable before upgrading radios. Gains at the antenna help every radio on the network.
  • Standardise connectors across kit so antennas can be swapped between vehicles and relays.
  • Keep spares of the items that get damaged most, such as handheld antennas and vehicle whips.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most cost-effective upgrade for team communications?

Better antennas and cable on base stations and vehicles. These improve every radio on the network, often more than replacing handsets.

Should teams use VHF or UHF?

Many teams use VHF, which carries well over open hills. UHF can work better around buildings. The choice usually depends on existing licences and partner networks.

Is satellite communication worth carrying?

For teams operating in areas with no terrestrial coverage, satellite gives a fallback when every other network fails.
