Choosing a Base Station Antenna: BASE001, BASE004 and BASE301 Compared

A base station antenna is the single biggest factor in how far a repeater, dispatch site or fixed installation will reach. Unity gain versus higher-gain designs
The BASE001 A/B/C/D/E/X and HPBASE001 A/B/C/D/E are both unity-gain collinear designs (0 dBd, 2.1 dBi) with a wide 78–80° vertical beamwidth. That wide pattern matters at sites built on a mast or tower: a unity-gain antenna keeps signal spread evenly across the local horizon rather than concentrating it into a narrow slice. The base301 A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/J/K/X trades that breadth for 3 dBd of gain and a narrower 30° beamwidth, which suits sites where the coverage area is known and concentrated rather than spread in every direction.
Matching frequency and power to the site
BASE001 covers VHF from 118–174 MHz across its A–X variants, including a broadband X option spanning the full range. BASE004 moves into UHF, with variants from 330–512 MHz. base301 sits in the same VHF range as BASE001 but in narrower sub-bands, which is what allows the higher gain. HPBASE001 covers 112–178 MHz and is rated to 500 W, roughly three times the power handling of the standard BASE001 (150 W) — the obvious choice for higher-power repeater transmitters rather than a 50 W radio.
Mounting and connectors
All four families mount on a 30–60 mm vertical mast tube or via wall bracket, terminate in N-female, and carry an IP66 rating with a 55 m/s survival wind speed — standard for UK rooftop and mast installations. Fibreglass radomes over a brass, copper and aluminium element keep all four families serviceable in coastal and exposed sites without special order.

What's the difference between BASE001 and base301?
Both cover similar VHF ranges, but BASE001 is unity gain with a wide 78° beamwidth for broad coverage, while base301 delivers 3 dBd gain with a narrower 30° beamwidth for concentrated coverage in a known direction.
Do I need the high-power HPBASE001 instead of BASE001?
Only if your transmitter power exceeds roughly 150 W continuous. HPBASE001 is rated to 500 W and is built for higher-power repeater and base station transmitters; for typical 25–50 W mobile radio systems, BASE001 is the more cost-effective choice.
Can BASE004 be used for 5G or LTE applications?
