4G LTE Antennas for Fleet and Transport: A Specification Guide

Fleet LTE is no longer optional
Telematics, driver connectivity, in-vehicle CCTV offload and real-time routing all assume a reliable LTE link to the vehicle. For fleet operators, the antenna has moved from a peripheral accessory to a core specification item. Doing it properly pays back quickly in reduced support tickets and better uptime.
Band coverage: start with the modem
UK LTE bands matter because they dictate which antenna bandwidth is non-negotiable. For public safety and commercial fleet applications, we typically see at least:
- Band 3 (1800 MHz)
- Band 20 (800 MHz)
- Band 28 (700 MHz), increasingly important for public safety networks
- Band 7 (2600 MHz) for higher data rates in urban areas
- Band 1 (2100 MHz) as a fall-back in some coverage scenarios
An antenna specified only for 1800 MHz is a short-term decision. Specify wideband LTE antennas that cover 700 MHz to 2700 MHz (or wider) unless you have a very specific reason not to.
MIMO and diversity
Most current fleet modems expect at least 2x2 MIMO. That means you need two antennas, physically separated, ideally with decorrelation between their radiation patterns.
Separation and orientation
Avoid mounting both antennas in identical orientation on the same roof point. A minimum of 100 mm physical separation helps, but cross-polarisation between the two elements is more valuable than separation alone.
Combination antenna options
Purpose-built multi-port antennas, often marketed as combination or sharkfin units, package both MIMO paths in one housing. They simplify installation and often include GPS or Wi-Fi ports as well. For new fleet builds, these are usually the right specification choice.
Mechanical and environmental
IP rating and vibration
IP67 or better for external fleet mounts. Standard domestic antennas are not designed for the fatigue loading of an HGV. Specify automotive-grade where you can, with vibration testing confirmed on the datasheet.
Aesthetics and profile
For public-facing vehicles, low-profile sharkfin or roof-embedded antennas are a useful option. Profile choice can affect wind noise and, at high speed, mechanical stress on the mount.
Cable length
Order cable to the real run length, not generic stock. Excess cable coiled up loses performance and invites damage. Run your cable loss numbers at the top end of the band where attenuation is highest.
Upgrade-ready design
LTE deployments are rarely built from a clean sheet. If you expect to add GNSS, Wi-Fi, or a second LTE path within the life of the vehicle, specify multi-port combination antennas now rather than trying to retrofit later. It is almost always cheaper and cleaner to deploy capacity you do not yet use than to drill a second hole in twelve months' time.
