Antennas for CCTV and ANPR Backhaul Links

Cellular backhaul has made it possible to put CCTV and ANPR cameras almost anywhere, without trenching for fibre. The camera and router get the attention, but the antenna decides whether the link holds up during peak upload, in bad weather and at sites far from the nearest mast.

Know your upload requirement

Most cellular planning focuses on download speed, but cameras push data upwards. Continuous high-resolution video needs a strong, stable uplink. ANPR systems send smaller amounts of data but rely on low latency and constant availability. Size the antenna and router for the upload, not the download.

Use MIMO

Almost all 4G and 5G routers have at least two antenna ports. Connecting both to a proper MIMO antenna improves throughput and link stability. A single antenna on one port leaves the router without diversity, which often shows as video dropping out at busy times. Options include the 2J2424Ha Spitfire 2x MIMO wall antenna and the wider MIMO range.

Omni or directional?

  • Omni-directional antennas suit sites with good coverage from several masts, and vehicles or trailers that move.
  • Directional antennas focus gain towards one mast. They suit fixed sites at the edge of coverage, but must be aimed correctly and rechecked if the operator changes its network. See the directional range.

For wall-mounted fixed sites, the WAM5G covers 698 to 3800 MHz in a long-range multiband wall antenna.

Built for the roadside

Roadside and town centre equipment gets knocked, climbed on and pressure washed. Use antennas with suitable IP and impact ratings. The 2J7183Ba is rated IP67, IP69 and IK09 for exposed locations. Mount antennas above head height where possible, and route cables inside the pole.

Mounting position

  • Keep the antenna clear of the camera housing and pole-top equipment.
  • Avoid mounting inside metal cabinets. If the router must sit in a cabinet, take the antenna outside on a short cable.
  • Check line of sight to the serving mast, especially in urban areas with tall buildings.

Plan for network changes

UK operators continue to refarm spectrum as 3G closes and 5G expands. Wideband antennas covering 617 to 5925 MHz keep a site working through those changes without a return visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 5G antenna for a CCTV camera?

Not always. 4G is enough for many camera sites. A wideband antenna covering 4G and 5G bands keeps the option open if the router is upgraded.

Is a directional antenna better for a camera site?

At the edge of coverage it can be, because it focuses gain towards one mast. In areas with good coverage, an omni antenna is simpler and adapts to network changes.

How do I stop video dropping out?

Use a MIMO antenna on both router ports, mount it outside any metal cabinet, and size the link for upload capacity rather than download speed.
