Bespoke Antenna Projects: When Off-the-Shelf Doesn't Fit the Brief

When bespoke actually makes sense
Most antenna applications can be solved with a well-chosen stock product. Some cannot. A short list of triggers that usually tip a project into bespoke territory:
- An unusual frequency plan, typically outside common public safety or commercial bands.
- A mounting footprint dictated by an existing vehicle or enclosure, with no flexibility.
- Environmental protection requirements beyond standard IP67, such as explosive-zone rated equipment.
- Low-visibility or non-standard cosmetic requirements, common in security and covert applications.
- Specific performance envelopes, for example a gain-and-pattern combination that no stock product hits precisely.
What we need to quote
A tidy bespoke request gets a tidy quote. The minimum information we usually need:
- Target centre frequency, bandwidth and required VSWR across that bandwidth.
- Gain and pattern requirements, or a reference antenna you are trying to match or improve on.
- Mounting footprint: CAD, a sketch, or measured dimensions of the target location.
- Environmental conditions: IP rating, temperature range, UV exposure, vibration profile.
- Expected annual volume and any in-life ordering cadence.
A single-paragraph brief often costs more iterations than a well-drawn page of requirements. It is worth taking the time to capture it properly on the way in.
Our bespoke process
Discovery call
Engineer to engineer, scope and feasibility review, with a sample datasheet of the closest stock baseline. Usually 30 minutes and enough to confirm whether we can help and roughly what the development path looks like.
Specification document
We write up the agreed specification so everyone is signing off the same thing. This removes ambiguity and protects both sides.
Prototype
Typical prototype lead time is four to eight weeks, depending on complexity and component availability. We measure in-house and share results against the agreed specification before moving forward.
Field test
Where practical, we support on-site testing with the customer. Real-environment testing catches issues that bench measurement does not.
Production
Once signed off, volume lead times are normally comparable to stock product timelines. We hold tooling and production documentation at the manufacturing facility for reorder continuity.
What bespoke does not mean
Bespoke does not mean long or expensive by default. Many bespoke projects are minor adaptations of existing Renair antennas: a different connector, a different bracket, a colour change, a different cable length. These can often be quoted and delivered in weeks, not months.
