Mounting Types Compared: Fixed Base, Through-Bolt, and Magnetic

Mounting is an engineering choice, not a hardware afterthought
Mounting type affects antenna performance, installation time and long-term reliability. It is worth specifying deliberately, rather than accepting whatever the vehicle or site happens to offer.
Fixed base (thread-mount)
A threaded base, typically 3/8 inch or similar, bolted into a permanent bracket or foot. Used on everything from fixed base stations to vehicles with dedicated antenna brackets.
When to use it
Best for base stations, specialist vehicles, and long-term installs where permanence is required and the bracket or mounting surface is engineered as part of the installation.
Practical notes
Rugged and permanent, with optimal electrical contact. The whip can be replaced without re-running cable. Requires a proper bracket or permanent hole; slower to roll out across a large fleet than magnetic alternatives.
Through-bolt
A single threaded stud passes through the vehicle roof or cabinet panel, with the antenna sitting on top and a cable and nut securing it underneath.
When to use it
The standard choice for permanent vehicle installs, fleet vehicles with standardised bracketry, and public safety vehicles where connection integrity is safety-critical.
Practical notes
Clean aesthetic and excellent ground plane connection, which is important for antenna performance. Requires drilling, careful sealing, and access behind the panel. Seal the penetration properly from the underside; water tracking down the inner panel is a common failure mode.
Magnetic
A rare-earth magnet base sits on a metal roof, with the coax routed through a door seal or dedicated grommet to the radio.
When to use it
Temporary installs, evaluation units, and vehicles on short-term hire. Also useful for rapid deployment scenarios where drilling is not authorised.
Practical notes
Zero-drill and rapid to swap. Relies on a clean, flat metal surface for both ground plane and physical retention. Less secure at speed, and cable routed through door seals wears over time. Not suitable for permanent public safety installs.
Quick decision aid
| Scenario | Recommended mount |
|---|---|
| New-build public safety vehicle | Through-bolt |
| Leased vehicle or pool car | Magnetic |
| Rooftop base station install | Fixed base, bolted to mast or bracket |
| Evaluation or demonstration unit | Magnetic |
| Heavy goods vehicle, long-life install | Through-bolt |
Specify at order, not on site
Most of our antenna product pages on renair.co.uk list the compatible mounting options. If you are scoping a large fleet with mixed mounting requirements, we can supply a coordinated bill-of-materials. Email sales@renair.co.uk with the vehicle list and we will prepare a quote.
