Marine Antenna Installation Mistakes That Cost Range, Not Just Money

The antenna is rarely the problem
When an AIS, VHF or GPS system underperforms on a vessel, the antenna itself is rarely at fault. In most cases, the antenna was specified correctly and the installation let it down. Salt air, vibration and confined spaces expose shortcuts that would never show up in a showroom or a bench test.
Five installation mistakes that cost range
1. Mounting too close to other antennas
VHF, AIS and GPS antennas mounted within a metre of each other can desense one another, particularly when a high-power VHF transmission swamps a nearby AIS or GPS receiver. Where deck space allows, separate antennas vertically as well as horizontally, and keep GPS clear of any transmitting antenna's near field.
2. Undersized or degraded coax
Long cable runs from a flybridge or masthead to the chart table add up. RG58 is not appropriate for marine VHF runs beyond a few metres; specify low-loss coax rated for the run length, and check the connectors at both ends have not corroded before assuming the cable is the problem.
3. Poor grounding on the ground-plane-dependent types
Some VHF and AIS antennas rely on the vessel's structure or a dedicated ground plane to perform as specified. On GRP hulls without a proper ground plane, range can fall well short of the datasheet figure. Confirm whether the specified antenna is ground-plane independent before assuming the install is at fault.
4. Connectors sealed with tape, not designed seals
Self-amalgamating tape is a temporary fix, not a permanent seal. On a masthead connection exposed to spray, UV and vibration for a full season, an unsealed or poorly sealed N-type or PL-259 connector is the single most common point of failure we see reported back to us.
5. Ignoring vibration at the masthead
A masthead antenna sees continuous low-amplitude vibration underway, and shock loading in a seaway. Mounting hardware that is adequate at the dock can work loose over a season. Use locking hardware and revisit the mount at the mid-season check, not just at haul-out.
What survives a UK season
- Marine-grade 316 stainless fixings, not zinc-plated hardware.
- IP-rated housings with a stated saltfog and UV test basis, not just an IP number on its own.
- Properly sealed connectors, using a designed weatherboot rather than a field-improvised wrap.
- Coax specified for the actual run length, with connectors terminated correctly at both ends.
A mid-season check worth five minutes
- Visually inspect masthead mounting hardware for movement or corrosion.
- Check connector seals at deck level for cracking or water ingress.
- Confirm AIS and VHF are both still reporting expected range against known reference points.
- Look for chafe on any cable run passing through a deck gland or hull penetration.
