Wind Loading and Mechanical Considerations for Rooftop Yagi Installations

RF performance is only half the specification

Yagi antennas are chosen for gain and directivity, and the temptation is to specify on those numbers alone. On a rooftop mast, the mechanical side of the specification matters just as much. A 12-element Yagi with excellent gain figures is a liability if the mast, bracket or fixings were not sized for it.

What wind loading actually means on site

Wind loading is the force the antenna and mast assembly puts on its fixings and the structure behind them. It scales with the antenna's frontal area and boom length, and increases sharply with wind speed, not linearly. A longer-boom Yagi presents more area to the wind than a short 2 or 3-element model, and the loading on the mount is correspondingly higher.

What to check before you order

  • The antenna's rated survival wind speed, usually specified in the datasheet in m/s or mph.
  • The mast or pole's own rated wind loading capacity at the height you are mounting.
  • Whether the mounting bracket is rated for the element count and boom length you are specifying, not just a generic 'Yagi bracket'.
  • The fixing method into the roof structure, and whether it was designed to take lateral load, not just vertical weight.

Mast and bracket selection

Mast diameter and wall thickness

A longer-boom Yagi needs a mast with sufficient diameter and wall thickness to resist bending under gust loading, not just static weight. Thin-wall scaffold tube is rarely the right choice for a 6-element or longer Yagi at height.

Guying and bracing

Above a certain mast height and antenna size, unguyed installation is asking for a return visit after the first winter storm. Where the site allows it, guy wires at two or three points spread the load and reduce mast deflection significantly.

Bracket standoff distance

A wall-mounted bracket with a longer standoff arm increases the leverage the wind exerts on the fixing points. Use the shortest standoff that clears the structure, and fix into masonry or structural steel, not render or cladding alone.

Site survey checklist

  1. Confirm the mounting structure can take the calculated load, not an assumed one.
  2. Check local terrain for wind funnelling, particularly on coastal or exposed rural sites.
  3. Specify corrosion-resistant fixings appropriate to the site's exposure category.
  4. Where in doubt on load calculations, involve a structural engineer before the antenna goes up, not after it comes down.

Getting it right first time

Every Yagi in the Renair range lists its physical dimensions, weight and wind rating on the product page, so the mechanical spec can be checked against the site before the van leaves the yard.
