Preparing Antenna Installations for Autumn and Winter: A UK Storm-Season Checklist

Why storm season matters for antenna installations
UK autumn and winter bring a predictable but often underestimated set of risks to antenna systems: sustained gale-force wind, driving rain, ice loading, and rapid freeze-thaw cycles. Met Office data consistently shows the highest wind speeds and heaviest rainfall of the year between October and February, and named storms now arrive most winters. An antenna system that has performed reliably through summer can fail within weeks once storm season begins if it was not specified or maintained with these loads in mind.
Most storm-related failures are preventable. They come from accumulated wear that goes unnoticed until wind loading or water ingress finds the weak point: a slightly loose bracket, a connector that was never quite fully weatherproofed, a mast rated for a lower wind zone than the installation site actually experiences.
Pre-winter inspection checklist
Mechanical checks
- Mast and pole condition -- Inspect for corrosion, especially at welds and the base plate. Check for any visible bending or stress fractures.
- Guy wires and tensioning -- Verify tension is within the manufacturer's specification. Slack guy wires allow excessive mast movement in gusts, accelerating fatigue at fixing points.
- Mounting brackets and U-bolts -- Torque to specification. Thermal cycling loosens fixings over a summer; a bracket that was hand-tight in June can be dangerously loose by October.
- Antenna alignment -- Confirm bearing and tilt have not drifted from commissioning values. Wind-induced movement over months can shift alignment gradually.
Weatherproofing checks
- Connector seals -- Check self-amalgamating tape and heat-shrink boots for cracking or lifting. UV exposure degrades most weatherproofing tapes within 12 to 18 months; replace proactively rather than waiting for a leak.
- Cable glands -- Confirm glands are fully tightened and gaskets are intact. A gland that has never been re-torqued since installation is a common source of slow water ingress.
- Drip loops -- Verify cable routing includes a drip loop below any cable entry point, so water running down the cable falls away from the seal rather than pooling against it.
- Radome and housing integrity -- Inspect for cracks, UV degradation, or loose fixing screws that could allow water into the antenna enclosure.
Electrical and grounding checks
- Earthing continuity -- Test resistance to earth at the mast and at any lightning protection system. Corrosion at earth connections is one of the most common faults found during autumn inspections.
- Surge protection -- Confirm surge arrestors are present on feeder lines entering buildings and that indicator lights (where fitted) show normal status.
- Cable entry sealing -- Check that building entry points are sealed against both water and, where relevant, rodent ingress.
Wind loading and mast ratings
UK wind loading standards (BS EN 1991-1-4) define regional basic wind speeds that vary significantly by location, from around 21 m/s in sheltered inland areas to over 30 m/s on exposed coasts and high ground. A mast, bracket, and antenna combination specified for an inland site is frequently under-rated for a coastal or elevated installation. Before storm season, confirm that the installed hardware's rated wind speed exceeds the site's regional basic wind speed with an appropriate safety margin, particularly for larger panel and Yagi antennas that present significant wind-loaded surface area.
Pay particular attention to ice loading in combination with wind. Ice adds both weight and, more significantly, wind-catching surface area to masts, guy wires, and antenna elements. A structure rated for a given wind speed in ice-free conditions can be substantially over-loaded once even a few millimetres of ice accretion is present.
Post-storm inspection routine
After any named storm or period of sustained winds above 50 mph, a visual inspection should be carried out as soon as it is safe to do so, followed by a full mechanical and electrical check within the following week. Look specifically for:
- Visible mast or antenna movement from its commissioned position
- New signal degradation, VSWR increase, or connectivity drops reported since the storm
- Loose or missing fixings, particularly at the top of the mast where wind loading is greatest
- Physical damage to radomes, cable runs, or nearby structures that could indicate secondary impact damage
Storm-season checklist summary
- Complete a full mechanical, weatherproofing, and electrical inspection before October.
- Confirm mast and antenna hardware is rated for the site's regional wind zone, including ice-loading margin.
- Re-torque all fixings and re-tension guy wires annually; do not assume commissioning values still hold.
- Replace weatherproofing tape and connector boots proactively on any installation over 12 months old.
- Carry out a post-storm inspection after every named storm affecting the site.
- Keep a written maintenance log so degradation trends are visible year over year.
